When it comes to Wade Wilson, one of his comic co-creators, Fabian Nicieza, has stated that “DP brain cells are in CONSTANT FLUX. He can be gay one minute, hetero the next, etc. ALL ARE VALID.”. Based off the posters alone, you might assume that Deadpool and Wolverine are in fact extremely gay for each other. Or at least, Deadpool is extremely gay for Wolverine. Yet, the promotion and marketing for this movie has centered on one tired joke in particular: Wolverine and Deadpool are gay.
The IMAX poster, a riff on one of the Logan (a dystopian western. But the marketing campaign, so far, has all but relied on a single tiresome joke, in what is the movie marketing equivalent of pointing at something and going “ha, gay!” — that Deadpool wants to. Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, is known for his meta-humor and irreverent style.
Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, has never been explicitly defined in terms of sexual orientation in the main Marvel Universe. These promotional materials led many to expect a deeper exploration of their relationship on-screen. Despite this, the film failed to deliver a substantial romantic narrative between the two characters, focusing instead on humor.
Despite the backlash, some fans have defended the film, arguing that the jokes were meant to be light-hearted. However, for others, the lack of meaningful representation in favor of comedic punchlines was a letdown.
