The reclaiming of words is a practice used by marginalized groups to dull the dehumanization and sting of words used against them pejoratively by an oppressive group that enforces stereotypes and causes material harm.

Even if some Proud Boys are upset by this, as an organization their mission has very clearly been one of white supremacist fascism that is currently pointed toward anti-fascist movements and Black and Brown people of all sexualities. Some may write it off as a hollow yet harmless platitude or a simple clapback moment. But taking it a step further, this has kept publicity for the Proud Boys going, which is what Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys, describes wanting, and makes light of a militant organization that instills fear, fascism and white supremacy which has the potential to cause real harm.
